| Yoga is a 5,000 year old system that was developed in India and combines a wealth of practices both physical and spiritual. The body is viewed as a vehicle for liberation; by training the body and overcoming physical limitations one can embark on the journey to calmness and inner peace, and achieve the highest level of consciousness. The branch of Yoga called Hatha focuses particularly on training the body and mind through the practice of postures (asanas), breath (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana.) Hatha Yoga cleanses and strengthens the body, deepens internal awareness, and promotes clarity and relaxation. Though most Yoga exercise classes draw from the same Hatha tradition, teaching styles vary. | ||||

Ashtanga Yoga Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, this dynamic practice incorporates rigorous breath and a set sequence of postures that stretch the body in all directions. The combination of breath and postures creates heat which helps to stretch and strengthen the muscles, while cleansing the organs, and ridding the system of toxins. Iyengar Yoga Based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar, this practice emphasizes correct alignment with great attention to detail. Props such as blocks, ropes, and bolsters are used to help students get into the poses. Correct alignment is key to developing strength, concentration, and flexibility. Hatha Flow This is a strong and energetic style that synchronizes breath and movement in a continuous flow or Vinyasa. Students flow from posture to posture with awareness and a breathing technique that creates internal heat and detoxifies muscles and organs. Prenatal Yoga This class aims at helping expectant mothers increase their energy and stamina, build their strength and flexibility, and develop a level of spiritual and emotional calmness in preparation for labor and birth. The exercises are gentle, safe, and energizing. Restorative Yoga A sequence of supported yoga postures and breathing techniques to help sooth chronic pain, headaches, and tension. This rejuvenating and meditative practice will help to counteract the effects of stress and offer easy relaxing alternatives. |
