Pilates
In the 1930s, Joseph Pilates developed a series of exercises on the mat and on specialized equipments that utilized the core muscles of the body. His aim was to strengthen the center, lengthen the spine, increase body awareness, and build muscle tone and flexibility. The pilates method develops strong abdominal and postural muscles to support the skeletal system and act as the “powerhouse” of the body. A strong center helps alleviate back pain, prevent injury, and bring the body into balance and a better posture. The exercises are safe and “low impact.” Many doctors and clinics are now using Pilates exercises to rehabilitate people with injuries or chronic structural problems.
